Our visit to the Talgarth Festival PDF Print E-mail

Last Sunday Robert and I thought we would go and see what was occurring at The Talgarth Festival, a celebration of the Black Mountains and Welsh Countryside.

We visited the old market town during the afternoon and our first port of call was the Livestock Market.  This was where they were holding demonstrations and exhibitions, from woodturners to woolspinners, and blacksmiths to hedgemakers.  I particularly enjoyed the sheep shearing, done the old fashioned way with one man turning a handle and another sheering the sheep.  No electricity in the old days!  I loved the Alpacas too.  I'm a complete philistine when it comes to Alpacas, and was reminded that the fleece is not called wool!  I'll know next time!
Then we wandered around the stalls and got quite interested in the stall which sold Oriental foods.  We bought some Shrimp Paste and Rice Wine Vinegar for the store cupboard back at home, and then on the way to the Craft Fair in the historic Town Hall we stopped for a while to watch the Welsh Dancers in the Market Square.

We then took our dog Pip for a walk up on Rhos Fach on the common land between Talgarth and Hay on the foothills of the magnificent Black Mountains. The sun decided to come out for about 10 minutes, so I got the camera out and took some photos.  I hope you enjoy them.  An aeroplane was towing a glider (see photo).  Robert will be up there soon.  Hannah and Emily, our daughters, gave him a Gliding 'lesson' for his Christmas present last year.  Lucky thing!

Now here's a funny thing; depending on your point of view.  Robert knew that The Three Horseshoes at Velindre was on our route (via the gated road) back home, so somehow we ended up having a couple of drinks there.  Well, it was a Bank Holiday the next day!  We bumped into a couple of friends, which was nice ...  (does that remind you of a sketch on the Harry Enfield TV Show a few years back?)
