Transition Hay-on-Wye meeting - Kilvert’s, 23rd June 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Present: Phoebe Boulanger, Ainsleigh Rice, Paul Graves, Tim Organ, Philip Bauer

1.    The ‘Garden in Transition’ at the Hay Festival was unanimously recognised to have been a great success.  Many people walking through it remarked to us and particularly to the Free Tree duo what a delightful place with subtle messages that gently made them pause for thought.  Well done Dave and team!

As follow up Dave and Simon will be (have had) discussions with Andy Fryers of Hay Festival.  Andy is now working to see how the site can be maintained or improved for the future.  Transition Hay members recorded they were willing to assist.

2.    Transition Hay-on-Wye has been fortunate to get help from Marches TV to record several of our events and provide training.  Indeed construction of the Garden in Transition has already been recorded.  Post meeting Ainsleigh met with Miguel and training is now tentatively planned for Tuesday 14th July, filming of the Art Competition is also being finalised.

3.    The community garden is coming on fast. Phoebe reported being quite thrilled with progress.  Do please drop in to see it.  It’s over the bridge and first rising field to the left.  If you would like to get involved in the project they should contact Phoebe Boulanger phoebeboulanger@hotmail.com or Bob Hilton bobhilto_1@yahoo.com

4.    Preparations for the children’s art exhibition are progressing well.  Post meeting note we have a session “attaching pictures to tarpaulins” at Cusop Village Hall Friday evening 16th (drinks available) as preparations for hanging about 300 pictures in the Buttermarket on Saturday morning 17th bright and early, opens to public at 10:30 and winners will be  announced at 12:00. If you would like to help, please contact Paul Graves paulgraves7@tiscali.co.uk

5.    Stephanie Bradley from Transition Town Totnes is spending six months walking around the UK visiting Transition initiatives. She will come to Hay 2-6 August, and we’re arranging places for her to stay, to give talks (Library, the Globe, Community Garden and in the Market) and to meet local people. If you’re interested please contact Lesley lesley.arrowsmith468@btinternet.com and more info about the project is here: http://www.transitionnetwork.org/blogs/steph-bradley

6.    As an awareness-raising activity, a writing competition for adults plus possibly secondary schools on the theme of Transition was suggested for September. This may be in connection with local writing groups and could also connect with the ‘Sharing space’ day. Project being led by Paul Graves paulgraves7@tiscali.co.uk

7.    A ‘Sharing space’ day was suggested for September 25th as a development of last year’s ‘Celebrating Tomorrow’s Transport’ event. Tim has put in an application to close of some streets.  We’d use the Buttermarket and Market Square for workshops and demonstrations. The success of street closure will depend on bringing local traders and local residents along with the idea. It’ll link to the story writing competition.  We hope for games, street party, bike refurbishment, films, house preparation for winter weather, possible car club survey, cycle routes info, planting a tree etc.  Contact Tim Organ tim@co2dl.co.uk

8.    Marcher Apple Network have requested help from Transition Hay.  Can we make them some bat (and bird) boxes for their new paramor orchard in Cwm Du and likely also for Tredomen.  Ainsleigh will seek willing carpenters… post meeting Llanigon Young Farmers and the Youth Community group have expressed interest.  Also just received request can we help strim around the Tredomen trees.  Paul and Ainsleigh plan to go in about two weeks.  Anyone else interested please contact Ainsleigh ainsleigh_jennifer@btinternet.com.

9.    Post meeting, following comments on the draft of our Welsh Language policy from PAVO, Catherine Barr of BWA kindly has had our logo changed to become bilingual. You can see at the top of these minutes; it’s now our only logo. Ainsleigh will continue revising Policies in order to get more grant funding, maybe for the calendar year 2011.

10.    We have received funding from Awards for All for filming (£1,450), a promise from GLASU (about £1000) for the Garden in Transition, and private donations covering BTCV insurance and promises of some contributions to the Hay Day.

11.    Next Transition Hay-on-Wye newsletter to be sent out Tuesday 27th July.

12.    Post meeting, a couple more requests have been received for Household Energy Service energy efficiency surveys. If you know anyone who wants one, contact Ainsleigh ainsleigh_jennifer@btinternet.com

13.    The next meeting will take place on Monday 26th July at Kilvert’s, beginning at 7.30pm. There will be an open agenda again.   Deferred it by a week from normal 3rd week of the month for avoiding the Royal Welsh Show.

14.    The meeting was closed and the agenda was composted.
