Transition Towns

Welcome to the homepage for Transition Hay-on Wye

"As Mayor of Hay-on-Wye, I'd like to express my support for Transition Hay-on-Wye. Finding ways to draw on Hay's great sense of community spirit will be very important as we prepare for a future without cheap oil."

Fiona Howard, Mayor of Hay-on-Wye

“For local businesses - as for all local groups - the next few years will bring many changes as the demand for oil exceeds the available supply. The efforts of Transition Hay-on-Wye can help to make sure the changes are positive ones for the community.”

John Evans, Chair, Hay & District Chamber of Commerce

Transition what?

As the world runs out of cheap oil and other fossil fuels, and we start feeling the effects of climate change, many aspects of modern life will need to change – for example, how we build and heat our houses, the transport we use, the food we eat and how we grow it, how we dispose of our waste (and what we think of as ‘waste’), where we go on holiday and the types of work we do …

There are lots of steps we can take as individuals, and it is important for governments to respond to this transition at an international level. Work at both of these levels is essential but insufficient. Transition initiatives – there are now thousands worldwide - fit between the two, working at the level of communities.

Who is doing this?

Rather than trying to set up another local group, we are working closely with existing local organisations where possible, including social clubs, local businesses, the town and county council, and environmental groups. In this spirit, we are delighted that Wye Local has given us a section of their website to explain what is going on and how to get involved.

When, where and how will this happen?

Activities are planned throughout 2009 and beyond which will, firstly, raise local awareness of the need for community action and then identify ways to respond. These activities range from film screenings and talks, through to practical workshops on topics like sausage-making, keeping chickens and bike repair. In parallel with these events, project groups have been set up to look at the issues of energy, food, and waste. Further groups are planned to look at transport, economy, and health.

If you would like to join a project group, attend an event, and/or sign up for the monthly newsletter or contact the coordinating group please email tthayonwye@gmail.com. We are all volunteers so your patience is appreciated if there is a delay in responding to you. Also please do visit the Wye Local forum and get people talking about your ideas.

The Transition Network homepage (www.transitiontowns.org) contains background, administrative and technical information about Transition Initiatives around the world. The ‘Transition Culture’ online journal (http://transitionculture.org) is a frequently updated and friendly website maintained by the movement’s founder Rob Hopkins, which contains articles, short films, and news items relating to transition in practice.

Dear TTHay supporter PDF Print E-mail
The nights are drawing in and what better way to spend a few hours of a drizzly October evening than sitting in the pub, to wit, at a Transition Town Hay meeting!  Please come along if you would like to chat about anything transition related or find out more about what's going on:

Tuesday 18th October at 7.30pm in Kilverts

I thought it might be helpful to have a theme to focus on at the meeting...
A possible topic of discussion is the new 5p carrier bag charge which came into effect in Wales on 1st October.  The Regulations do not specify where the proceeds of the charge should go but it is expected that they should be passed on to charities or good causes in Wales, and in particular to environmental projects. I'd like to see if businesses in Hay would donate the charge to support a TTHay initiative.  How about using the cash to put on a free basketry workshop for local people so they no longer need plastic bags for shopping!  Or materials could be bought for the Hay Youth Club to create re-usable cotton bags or re-usable bicycle inner tube baskets!  In Wales we use 273 bags per household per year so this is a great opportunity to get people to think about and reduce their dependency on plastic and come up with creative alternatives to the carrier bag...

Open meeting and AGM at The Kilvert’s, 7.30pm, 22nd March 2011

Join us for a drink to discuss the future for Transition Hay-on-Wye!

The group has been active for two years now. Our projects include Hayfield community garden; free home energy surveys; an art exhibition for schools; and the 'Garden in Transition' at the Festival. Shortly we will be screening a short film of some of the work we've been doing.

But we feel like we are only scratching at the surface of what is possible in Hay, with all the creative and energetic people in and around the town. As oil prices continue to rise, now is a good time to ask what more could be done. Could the town be self-sufficient in fruit and vegetables? Could our community transport be fuelled from waste cooking oil? What if Hay met its own energy needs locally? What would a 'zero waste' Hay look like? And how can we approach all this in ways that are inspiring and positive?

The meeting will also include a short AGM.

Present: Phoebe Boulanger, Ainsleigh Rice, Paul Graves, Tim Organ, Philip Bauer

1.    The ‘Garden in Transition’ at the Hay Festival was unanimously recognised to have been a great success.  Many people walking through it remarked to us and particularly to the Free Tree duo what a delightful place with subtle messages that gently made them pause for thought.  Well done Dave and team!
