Due to the cancellation of Chatsworth Horse Trials this weekend I was able to attend Nicola's Plant Sale on The Green. Nicola holds a plant sale here twice a year, by kind permission of W J George, the famous Talgarth Butchers. Many shrubs, perennials and bedding plants were on offer. By the time we got there many of the plants had been sold, but I managed to buy some Antirrinums, Stocks and Dianthus for our garden. Jason Hirst has his good quality outdoor furniture in the middle of the green and Gaynor was selling cakes from her stall. Nicola's helpers, including Emma and Hannah were doing a great job. Bunting hung everywhere which gave the sale a rather nice festive feel. If you missed this sale, there will be another one in the Autumn. Watch out for the date in Wye Local! |

New falls service for local residents Poor balance and fear of falling can restrict a person’s lifestyle, particularly in later life. Loss of confidence can reduce the enjoyment of going shopping, visiting friends or playing with grandchildren. If you have fallen once, unfortunately you are more likely to fall again. Your District Nurse or General Practitioner can help and they want to know about any problems with poor balance sooner rather than later, as “a stitch in time saves nine”. Below are the contact numbers for local nurse-led falls prevention services. These provide access to physiotherapy, occupational therapy and medical services if required. Falls prevention group exercise sessions are now running at Bronllys Hospital for suitable older people. If you or a relative has fallen you can access these clinics through your District Nurse, General Practitioner, Physiotherapist or by self referral. The weather was very kind to us on Easter Saturday for our first Car Boot Sale of the year. The car boot sales are held in Hay Primary School just off the main car park and there was a queue of cars with eager sellers waiting to enter the grounds when we arrived early in the morning. The new signs that we have had made advertising the sale at the top of the car park on Oxford Road and our new upright "flag" sign at the entrance to the grounds obviously proved successful as a steady stream of buyers came through the gates right up to our closing time of 12.00 midday. Not so popular however, was the over-zealous Powys County Council Parking Attendant who decided to remove our laminated signs advertising the sale, from near the ticket machines in the car park and throw them in a bin !! The buyers, were as usual out, in force and were queuing to enter the site well before the advertised time of 9.30am....they do love a bargain and it was reminiscent of the sales in Oxford Street in London, come 9.30 when they were allowed to enter !! The new refreshment stall that we have provided was very popular with teas, coffees, cold drinks, crisps, chocolate bars and sweets on offer. The children accompanying their parents were very good customers for the sweets on sale and I think they will be badgering their parents to attend each and every sale!! It was lovely to see everyone who attended, both buyers and sellers. There were many familiar friendly faces from last year and many new visitors too, from far and wide. This boot sale is growing in popularity all the time and it is wonderful to hear some of the comments from some of our regular sellers such as : "I love coming to this sale....It is so well organized, not frenetic and so friendly" - Linda Wood from Abergavenny. " We love it here. We have done very well at the Sales this year and it is a most enjoyable day." - John and Sarah Zaluckyj from Lyonshall. The Car Boot Sales are held every other Saturday throughout the year from April through to October. Look out for the dates in every edition of Wye Local and Local Beacon magazines. We look forward to seeing you at forthcoming sales. |
